SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE CANDLELIGHT VIGIL

Date: Saturday, 1 September 2018
Time: 5pm – 8pm
Place: Outside on the west side of the Sydney Opera House Please arrive at the welcome desk between 5pm and 6pm.
5.00pm – 6.00pm: | Vigil participants arrive at welcome desk. Virtual Tribute Wall slideshow commences |
6.00pm: | Short presentation by the Gold Ribbon team |
6.30pm: | As the sun sets, the sails of the Opera House will start to glow gold Virtual Tribute Wall slideshow commences |
8.00pm: | Event concludes |
In case of inclement weather, come prepared with umbrella and clothing that will keep you dry.
Should the event be called off, you will be notified by email.
The vigil will be held outside on the west side of the Sydney Opera House under the sails in a special event location – see gold star on map here.
Those who have registered can make their way to the welcome desk, indicated by a gold star on the map here where they will be issued with an event wrist band for access.

Attendance numbers are restricted. To avoid disappointment, please register your intent to attend this event by registering now at this link or emailing marketing@ccia.org.au before by 5pm, Wednesday 29 August, 2018.

Limited seating in chairs will be available for those with special needs. Unfortunately, due to restrictions, you will not be able to bring your own chair.
Picnic blankets are encouraged as the ground surface is concrete.

This event is open to the public, particularly all people who have been affected or are working in the area of childhood cancer.
The Sydney Opera House is easily accessed by public transport. There is also a Wilson Parking station close by if you wish to drive, however parking is limited.
Please note: The current light rail construction along George Street will impact journeys to the Sydney CBD. It is important to plan ahead and allow additional travel time. Please visit My Sydney website for more information and consider using journey-planning apps on your mobile devices.

- Picnic meals will not be allowed into the vigil precinct
- Food for babies and toddlers is acceptable
- Food and drinks will be available for purchase in close proximity to the event
As a special tribute, images of children who are currently in treatment, those who have survived, and precious lives not lived will be shown on a large screen throughout the event.

Please leave open flame candles at home.
Due to safety regulations, only LED candles can be used during the vigil.
Each person attending will receive a FREE battery operated candle to use on the night and to take home as a memento.
The signature colour for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month is gold. Gold is a precious metal and represents the precious lives lost to childhood cancer. We encourage everyone to wear gold clothing on the evening.
There are many ways you can be involved in Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, even if you can’t be in Sydney on 1 September 2018.
- Be part of the Virtual Tribute Wall at the Sydney Opera House on 1 September. Simply email a caption and a photo of your loved one to marketing@ccia.org.au
- Host your own candlelight vigil. You can do this at home with loved ones or get your community involved. Call 1800 651 158 or visit goldribbon.org.au and we’ll give you a helping hand.
- Change your porch light to a golden orb. Let’s light the dark night gold for the whole
- Post new photos, post treasured old pics and hash tag #gogold4kids and #goldribbon
- Dress up. Wear gold from head to toe or just a simple gold ribbon goldribbon.org.au
Public toilets
Public toilets are located on the Lower Concourse and inside at the Main Box Office and Western Foyers. Accessible public toilets are available and located on the Lower Concourse, Main Box Office and Western Foyers.
Baby changing facilities
Baby change table and nappy bins are available in the Accessible public toilets in the below locations:
- Western Foyers
- Close to both the Drama Theatre as well as the Playhouse
- Lower Concourse
- Main Box Office accessible toilets
- Concert Hall Northern Foyer (both Male and Female)
ATMs
Lower Concourse – a Westpac ATM is available in the Lower Concourse area of the Sydney Opera House. This is positioned just near the stairs down to the lower concourse from the forecourt and near the entrance to the Carpark.
Western Foyers – A rediATM is available in the Western Foyers of the Sydney Opera House. This ATM is positioned opposite the lifts in the Western Foyers.
Public telephones
There are two public telephones on-site, one along the Lower Concourse past the carpark entrance. The second is situated outside Stage Door in the vehicle concourse.
This event is hosted by The Kids’ Cancer Project in conjunction with Cancer Australia and invited collaborative partners;
Children’s Cancer Institute, Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick, The Children’s Hospital at Westmead and Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation.
